Authorities were called to the scene on Clay Street around 4:20 p.m., where firefighters launched two Zodiac boats to complete the recovery effort, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.
EMS responded and the victim, who remains unidentified, was pronounced at 6:38 p.m. The incident remains under investigation.
